President William Lai announced Taiwan’s commitment to enhancing its role in sustainable development within the Asia-Pacific region by utilizing its expertise in science, technology, manufacturing, and innovation. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Forum & Exposition for Sustainability in Taipei, Lai outlined the nation’s strategy focused on resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity as foundational elements in promoting sustainability.
The forum, which gathers businesses and organizations from across Asia, centers on pivotal topics such as clean energy, circular design, green finance, and low-carbon living. In addressing these areas, Taiwan is making strides to improve urban resilience, bolster energy security, and expand the use of renewable energy. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance the power grid and energy storage capabilities, marking significant steps in Taiwan’s sustainable development journey.
A comprehensive carbon reduction strategy is underway in Taiwan, supported by technological and financial initiatives. As part of these efforts, the country has initiated the collection of carbon fee payments to aid in emissions reduction. This initiative forms part of a broader government push to support businesses in transitioning toward digitalization and achieving net-zero operations.
To facilitate this transition, Taiwan is establishing a NT$100 billion fund over the next eight years. This fund aims to provide substantial support to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through a diversified development program. By doing so, Taiwan intends to leverage its strengths in semiconductors, information technology, and precision manufacturing to contribute to sustainable growth and global sustainability efforts.
