China has achieved a significant milestone in its space endeavors with the successful inaugural flight of the Long March 12B carrier rocket. This launch on Monday, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, signifies a substantial boost in the country’s space capabilities as the rocket successfully reached its designated orbit and deployed the 10th batch of communication satellites for the Spacesail Constellation.
The Long March 12B, towering at approximately 72 meters, stands as China’s most formidable single-body rocket to date. It features a two-stage design powered by ten engines fueled by liquid oxygen and kerosene, generating an impressive 800 metric tons of thrust during liftoff. This powerful configuration allows it to transport payloads exceeding 20 tons into low-Earth orbit.
Initiated in September 2024, the development of the Long March 12B incorporated cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing its performance and efficiency. These innovations include high-performance propulsion components, lightweight structural designs, optimized fuel management, and autonomous flight-control software capable of adapting to in-flight irregularities. Looking ahead, engineers are preparing for future trials to recover and reuse the rocket’s first-stage booster, potentially paving the way for a reusable version of the Long March 12B in the coming years.
The mission also contributes to the expansion of the Spacesail Constellation, a satellite network in low-Earth orbit intended to deliver high-speed global broadband internet services. With this latest launch, more than 160 satellites have been deployed for the project, which aims to establish a fleet of over 10,000 satellites by 2030.
