Two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets, part of Taiwan’s purchase from the United States, unexpectedly returned to Hawaii shortly after their takeoff, potentially adding another delay to their delivery schedule. These aircraft, identified by serial numbers 6727 and 6728, initially departed from Hickam Field, Hawaii, but soon made their way back to the point of origin. The reason behind this turnaround remains unclear at this time.
Taiwan has placed an order for 66 F-16 C/D Block 70 jets, which are planned to be stationed at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County. These will be operated by the Air Force’s 7th Tactical Fighter Wing as part of efforts to bolster the defense capabilities of the region’s eastern areas. The two jets were slated to fly to Guam for refueling and resupply before continuing their journey to Taiwan. The flight from Hawaii to Guam typically lasts approximately eight hours and 20 minutes, followed by another four-hour and 40-minute journey from Guam to Taiwan.
The first of these aircraft was scheduled to arrive in Taiwan this week. However, delivery has already been postponed from its original 2023 date due to complications associated with relocating and restarting the production line, as well as supply-chain disruptions. The remainder of the aircraft is expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2028.
