During its upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan from 2026 to 2030, China is set to broaden its import portfolio, focusing on advanced technology, key industrial components, energy resources, and high-quality agricultural products. This strategic move, announced by the General Administration of Customs, aims to propel industrial modernization, enhance domestic consumption, and provide Chinese consumers with an expanded selection of quality global products. A notable aspect of this strategy is China’s intent to diversify its import sources to include a wider array of countries.
Officials have observed a significant expansion in China’s trade activities in the first half of the year, with imports and exports both experiencing double-digit growth. Interestingly, the growth rate of imports has surpassed that of exports, driven by increasing domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods. This trend underscores China’s commitment to fostering a more open market environment and enhancing its trade diversification efforts.
In line with these objectives, China is actively working to improve market access for overseas agricultural and food products. Efforts are being made to streamline quarantine and import approval processes. Since the beginning of the year, the country has granted market access to 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 additional countries, significantly expanding the range of imported food, now sourced from over 150 countries and regions worldwide.
Experts within China highlight that this import expansion strategy is a testament to the nation’s dedication to greater market openness and robust global economic cooperation. By increasing imports, China aims to cater to the rising demand for industrial upgrades and superior consumer goods, simultaneously creating new business opportunities for international exporters looking to tap into the growing Chinese market.
As domestic consumption continues to rise, Chinese officials anticipate that the expanding consumer market will present even greater opportunities for global businesses. This development aligns with China’s broader objectives of fostering a more interconnected global trade ecosystem and solidifying its role as a pivotal player in international markets.
