Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has embarked on a five-day state visit to Taiwan, aiming to bolster bilateral relations and explore avenues for expanded cooperation. During his visit, Prime Minister Pierre will engage in discussions with Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te and other senior officials to address shared interests and potential collaborative opportunities.
In a gesture of diplomatic respect, President Lai will host a military honours ceremony to welcome the Saint Lucian leader. Additionally, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is set to honour Prime Minister Pierre with a formal banquet.
The prime minister’s delegation includes notable figures such as Saint Lucia Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A Jean, and Saint Lucia Development Bank Chairman Daryl Raymond. The group is scheduled to visit key sites, including Cathay General Hospital, Taipei 101, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu, highlighting the visit’s focus on strengthening ties in various sectors.
This marks Prime Minister Pierre’s fourth visit to Taiwan since taking office in 2021, emphasizing the ongoing engagement between the two nations. Saint Lucia and Taiwan have maintained diplomatic relations since 2007, after a previous interruption when Saint Lucia switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1997, before re-establishing ties with Taiwan.
The visit is seen as a strategic move to enhance diplomatic engagement and explore future collaboration in areas of mutual interest, reinforcing the longstanding relationship between Saint Lucia and Taiwan.
