Amid escalating military pressure from China, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the crucial role of U.S. arms sales in bolstering Taiwan’s ability to defend itself. In the face of these challenges, Yui highlighted Taiwan’s efforts to increase defense spending and enhance its defensive capabilities independently, acknowledging the necessity of self-reliance in addressing security threats.
Currently under consideration by the U.S. administration is a proposed arms package worth approximately US$14 billion for Taiwan. This proposal has garnered backing from U.S. lawmakers who recognize the urgency of Taiwan’s defense needs in light of China’s expanding military presence in the area. Yui stressed that the scale of military support should align with the threat level posed by China’s frequent military exercises, warship deployments, and aircraft operations near Taiwan.
Yui reiterated that Taiwan’s primary objective is to safeguard its security and uphold its democratic system through defensive strategies. The representative emphasized that while international support is valuable, Taiwan must also focus on strengthening its own defensive measures to prepare for any potential conflicts.
In response to these developments, U.S. officials have reaffirmed that Washington’s policy regarding Taiwan remains consistent, with continued support for Taiwan’s security being a key aspect of the bilateral relationship. Despite the ongoing regional tensions, Taiwan has expressed confidence in its enduring partnership with the United States, underscoring the importance of this alliance in maintaining regional stability.
