Taiwan’s National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) has unveiled the technical details of the Chiang Kung missile, which is set to play a pivotal role in Taiwan’s ambitious “T-Dome” integrated air defense network. Known as Tien Chien IV, this high-altitude interceptor is engineered to target ballistic missiles at elevations reaching up to 70 km. The system features a land-based vertical launch mechanism alongside a two-stage solid-propellant rocket, enhanced with vectored thrust for improved agility at high altitudes.
The NCSIST highlighted that the missile is equipped with radar technology capable of detecting various target types and engaging multiple tactical ballistic missiles, even when contending with electronic warfare threats. The Chiand Kung system includes a mobile active electronically scanned array radar, specifically designed to operate effectively in conditions with electromagnetic interference and GPS jamming. This capability aims to fill a gap in Taiwan’s current air defense by providing a high-altitude interception that complements the country’s existing systems within the planned T-Dome network.
Despite its promising capabilities, the Chiang Kung missile program faces financial challenges. The missile was notably absent from the nation’s special defense budget, leading Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense to pursue funding through an alternative supplementary budget. Officials have expressed concerns that delays in securing this funding could impact both the missile’s acquisition timeline and the broader development of the T-Dome network.
