The newly opened Shengji Tunnel in Taipei promises to significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion for commuters in the area. This infrastructure project connects Zhongxiao East Road with the access road to the National Biotechnology Research Park in Nangang District, providing a more efficient route for travelers.
Costing NT$1.878 billion, the tunnel spans approximately 824 meters, with a 716-meter tunnel section, and is designed to improve traffic flow on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road. It offers a faster connection between Nangang and Sijhih District in New Taipei City, cutting travel times from the research park to Nangang Station from 15–20 minutes down to less than 10 minutes during peak hours.
Apart from easing daily commutes, the tunnel serves as an alternative route during emergencies, such as flooding on Academia Road. It also accommodates pedestrians and cyclists with a separate pathway, enhancing accessibility and safety for all road users.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, opened in 2018, has become a hub for over 2,600 researchers and professionals, contributing significantly to the growth of biomedical research and biotechnology activities in the Nangang area. The new tunnel is expected to further support this development by facilitating smoother and more reliable transportation.
