The launch of the World Alliance for Disaster Management (WADM) in Taipei is set to enhance global disaster preparedness through improved international collaboration. This initiative is designed to streamline disaster response efforts by linking governments, emergency agencies, businesses, and academic institutions across borders, emphasizing the importance of a united approach in tackling natural calamities.
Taiwan, a nation with significant experience in disaster management, welcomed officials and experts from around the world for the event. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung underscored that disasters transcend national boundaries, highlighting the necessity for countries to work together to bolster resilience and readiness. The WADM aims to facilitate this cooperation, focusing on areas such as disaster prevention, early warning systems, emergency responses, and recovery strategies.
Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang reflected on Taiwan’s history with international aid, particularly following the 1999 Jiji earthquake. She noted Taiwan’s readiness to contribute to the alliance by sharing its expertise in disaster response through comprehensive training programs and joint exercises. This experience positions Taiwan as a valuable leader within the newly formed alliance, offering insights and practices that can be adopted globally.
